beeswax, honey & oatmeal scrub
This is a lovely, crunchy soap that leaves you feeling clean and shiny. I have used it for complete bars and also as a layer on top of a smooth soap so that you can choose when you wish to use the scrubby bit. Adjust the amount of oatmeal according to how rough you want the finished bar to be. I chose to add orange essential oil and you could complement this by substituting some of the oats with finely-ground dried orange peel.
SOAP STYLE:
▪ scrubby bar with large bubbles
▪ good for all skin types
- 10oz (295g) vegetable fat (shortening)
- 12oz (350g) olive oil
- 10oz (295g) coconut oil
- 2oz (60g) beeswax
- 10oz (300g) distilled or spring water
- 4½ oz (141g) sodium hydroxide (caustic soda/lye)
- 2oz (50g) medium oatmeal (not instant porridge oats)
- 2 tbsp (30ml) honey
- 1 tbsp (15ml) each of orange and clary sage essential oils
Grease a shallow square or oblong mould. Place the fat, base oils and beeswax in a stainless steel or enamel pot over a low heat. Pour the water into a heavy glass or plastic bowl or jug. Wearing rubber gloves and eye protection, add the sodium hydroxide (caustic soda/lye) to the water and stir until dissolved. When the oils have melted, remove them from the heat.
Place one sugar thermometer in the oils and one in the caustic solution. When both thermometers reach an equal temperature between 120°F (49°C) and 140°F (60°C), pour the caustic solution into the oil. Zap with a stick blender until the mixture reaches trace.
Sprinkle the oatmeal into the mix and stir well. Add the honey and the essential oils. Stir well. Pour immediately into the mould and cover with a towel or blanket. Leave to set for 24 hours or until the soap reaches a solid consistency. Wearing rubber gloves, turn the soap out of the mould and cut into chunks. Cover the soap and leave to cure for four weeks before use.
